A Nice, Pretty Brown Christmas!

My girls always laugh that “Mama prays for a nice, pretty brown Christmas”. It’s not that a beautiful snowy backdrop doesn’t provide for a festive holiday view out the window; rather, snow storms in Kansas and Nebraska tend to bring “horizontal snow” with 45 mile per hour winds that make caring for cattle extremely challenging! Christmas is my favorite holiday, and I cherish that time with my family – making memories and sharing God’s love with others. My prayer for a nice, pretty brown Christmas is one that comes from the heart of a Mama who puts her animals first, but desires for a Christmas morning spent with family and smiles.

Farmers are a unique and complex bunch. At the very foundation, our lives are simple.

But, Mother Nature many times complicates our lives and challenges us in spite of the simplicity of our lifestyle. Winter on the prairie is often harsh. What may look pretty out the window, threatens the safety of our animals and our families as we go out into the weather to tend to them. In order to remain healthy, the majority of cattle in our region must be fed each day during the winter regardless of whether they live in a feed yard or on a ranch.

I believe that the truck drivers that service farmers are the unsung heroes of food production. They play a critical role ensuring that we have the feed that our animals need regardless of the weather or the date. Just as we place our animals ahead of our families on Christmas morning, so do the Asphalt Cowboys of Jason Aldean’s popular country song. They are on the road, each and every day, ensuring that our animals will have constant access to the fresh and high-quality feed that they need to survive winter on the prairie.

It’s not always easy to do the right thing, but our asphalt cowboys give of themselves with great effort and dedication to ensure that our cattle can receive excellent care. The harmony and teamwork that exists between our truck drivers and our feed yard cattle caregivers would not be possible without the men and women who loyally devote themselves to getting the job done.

This holiday season, we would like to say a big THANK YOU to our crew at Ward Trucking for always going the extra mile to ensure that we have the feed that we need so that our animals and their caregivers can greet Christmas morning with both a full stomach and a smile!
